AVIS HAS MET ITS COMMITMENT TO REDUCE CO2 EMISSIONS IN 2020 ACROSS ITS ENTIRE FLEET

United Rental Group, s.r.o., a leader in car rental and leasing in Slovakia operating under the AVIS brand, has met its commitment to reduce CO2 emissions in 2020 across its entire fleet.

Key points of the report:

  • AVIS Slovakia has met its commitment to low fleet emissions.
  • The company has adapted its fleet composition to current developments related to COVID-19.
  • AVIS’s commercial vehicle fleet supports the booming e-commerce sector.
  • Environmental sustainability is a social commitment.

NOVEMBER 11, 2020, BRATISLAVA

The company is proud to announce that it has exceeded its original goal of achieving 105 g/km of CO2 emissions for the Avis fleet, reaching 98.5 g/km of CO2

Company CEO Vladimir Orth stated that this result was achieved primarily through a rigorous selection process when purchasing vehicles that meet the strictest emissions limits within the EU-27. In selecting its fleet composition, the company focused primarily on small and medium-sized vehicles with low emissions, as well as PHEVs and EVs.

For commercial vehicles, for which the EU has not yet set such strict limits, the group continues to monitor the market and purchase vehicles with the lowest emissions in their class. In 2020, CO2 emissions from commercial vehicles were reduced by 11%.

The Group’s overall fleet and business operations in 2020 were impacted by the spread of the COVID-19 virus. For this reason, tourism and vehicle usage by business clients—who switched to working from home—dropped to record lows. Nevertheless, the group very quickly redirected its activities to meet demand, replacing part of the lost market share with new business.

Overall, the fleet decreased by 50% in 2020, with the passenger car rental segment recording a 60% decline. However, the robust fleet of commercial vehicles expanded and began to handle deliveries for e-commerce, which has replaced traditional brick-and-mortar stores. The average age of vehicles in 2020 reached 10.5 months.

Reducing emissions when purchasing cars is still not supported by the government in Slovakia. Therefore, this initiative is primarily a demonstration of the company’s social responsibility as it operates in Slovakia for the benefit of the people and the country. Customers no longer choose a vehicle solely for transportation; they are also concerned about safety and emissions, and how these impact the surrounding environment. This is one of the key factors in choosing a rental company. Young people are the main advocates of this idea.

Avis is part of a global network of car rental and leasing companies. It is crucial to highlight the fact that emissions are important for our continued healthy and trouble-free lives.

We believe we will set a good example for other companies that join this initiative.
